There’s always something about nature that makes me want to slow down and breathe a little deeper.
That’s why I was eager to visit Genting Highlands on our trip to Malaysia.
Kuala Lumpur was our first stop.
We stayed at a nice hotel near the Petronas Twin Towers and planned to check out Genting Highlands the next day.
We were ready for a change of scenery, as we were getting tired of the Kuala Lumpur’s hustle and bustle.
As the bus made its way there, we loved watching the landscape disappear into the mist, and we were sure we were in for a wonderful getaway.
I was pretty sure, Genting Highlands would be much like Puncak, Bogor.
I pictured a breath of fresh air, cleaner air, and beautiful views of nature.
The cable car took us higher, passing Chin Swee Station along the way.

The view was breathtaking. Below us was a lush forest, with a winding road cutting through the trees.

But when we reached the final cable car station at the top, we realised that Genting Highlands was not quite what we had in mind.
Instead of the serene getaway we had imagined, we found ourselves in a bustling shopping complex, complete with endless shops and an indoor amusement park.
This was definitely not what I had signed up for.
To make matters worse, we had no idea how to spend the next five hours before our bus was due to leave.
We tried walking around the huge mall, hoping to find something that would pique our interest, but we just weren’t feeling it.
Maybe we were simply too disappointed to enjoy anything there.
Eventually, we decided to cut our losses and leave early.
We quickly booked an earlier bus and cancelled our original ticket, without a refund.
What This Trip Taught Me
Travel doesn’t always go as planned, and sometimes, things can go wrong even when you’ve done your best to prepare.
If there’s one thing I learned from this trip, it’s to expect the unexpected and keep my expectations in check.
I also learned not to rely solely on what I see on social media.
Before visiting a place, it’s worth doing a little more research to get a better idea of what it’s really like.
After all, sometimes a little preparation can save you from a lot of disappointment.
Speaking of cable car rides, I have an experience of taking a cable car in Saudi Arabia.
Check out our cable car experience in Taif, where we explored the city while taking in the scenery from above.
